hopgood's

even after the disappointing lunch this week, I still think Momofuku's toronto expansion is a good thing, as more competition always elevate everyone's game.  One place that is playing at a very high level right now is Hopgood's Foodliner. The meal I had there last night was not merely good, it was outstanding.  I had possibly the most beautifully shucked oysters anywhere.  Every dish was thoughtfully composed and well executed, I especially liked the surf and turf tartare and the marinated halibut (kinda like a ceviche).  The fried sweetbread with burnt bread and hay sauce was also excellent and a great fall dish.  Service was friendly and attentive, and everyone was very knowledgeable on what they are serving and professional.  Wine list was small but had number of good bottles at decent price point (~$50-70).  Although the food was quite different, the experience reminded me of Blackhoof back in the days but with much better service.  If there are more places like Hopgood's in Toronto, there would not be a line outside on University ave.
